Nabokov's almost obsessive return to insulting Freud has always suggested to me an anxiety masked by some projection. Nabokov certainly speaks as though he thought he understood himself very well. To be reminded that perhaps he knew less than he thought must have been an insult to his perfect civility and intellectual clarity.
Well, if there’s one thing that Nabokov did not lack, it was self-confidence. Of course, that’s one of the reasons why I like the guy so much. Thank you for reading!
