Thank you for this, just rewatched it based on this essay (shoutout to the public library). I think a lot of my initial response to the movie, and I’d guess its tepid reception overall, is how it relies on marketing/IP as “Michael Mann’s Miami Vice” but is just not a fun hang at all.
I never watched the original series, but its reputation is a balance of fun and grittiness with Crockett and Tubbs as the epitome of 80s coolness. Colin Farrell’s Crockett is just too morose to enjoy spending time with, especially given how much of the plot follows him. This must be in the running for least charismatic Farrell performance (intentionally so, I’m sure, but that’s part of the problem for me).
What a waste of Jamie Foxx, outside of a couple moments. I’d much rather watch a version of this that has Foxx in the lead.
Justin Theroux’s Zito must be the toughest person on the planet! Legs shot to hell, doesn’t scream once, applies a belt tourniquet, then ROLLS ONTO HIS LEGS and accurately guns down some bad guys. Where’s Zito’s spinoff sequel??? 😂
OMG thank you for spreading the word. I have been saying the style is the substance in Miami Vice since it first came out. The movie is a gem. You mentioned Crockett and Tubbs and rightly so. I also love that this has one of the most intense onscreen love stories ever committed to celluloid. Well you’re feeling the love I recommend revisiting Mann’s Blackhat (if you have not already). Not as good Miami Vice it is better than its initial reception would suggest. I think it is a hidden gem, albeit a minor one.
Outstanding! I have not yet seen Blackhat, but I am definitely going to watch it now. Thank you so much for reading! You might enjoy the podcast, as well. Good to know another Miami Vice fan is out there.

Well, I guess we differ on this one—but thank you for reading! And yes, Zito is one tough dude.
