What is Pages and Frames?

People who read a lot are usually the same people who watch a lot of films. Pages and Frames is an online magazine in which I share my enthusiasm for each, including times when they intersect. I’ve taught high-school English and college literature, history, and writing and wrote a book about Flannery O’Connor. I’ve co-hosted the podcast Fifteen-Minute Film Fanatics since 2020 and have conducted dozens of film, music, literature, and history-related interviews on the New Books Network. All of these endeavors, like this Substack, are fueled by enthusiasm. I want to share my enthusiasms with like-minded people and learn about their passions as well.

Dr. Johnson said, “What is written without effort is, in general, read without pleasure” and I’ll never post junk, random ruminations, or anything I wrote without effort. I never bloviate about politics or sound like a parody of jargon-laden academic writing. I work hard on this because I love it and want to make the reader’s experience enjoyable.
