A measured take. I loved the film, and I'm thankful Nolan tackled it the old-fashioned way (Old Hollywood era, not necessarily Homer era). It was almost like witnessing a Cecil B. DeMille epic on the big screen, only better.
"She’s like a frowning Clarence Oddbody to his George Bailey" woke up the dog sleeping next to me I laughed so hard! I'm more than done with all the Odyssey talk and have been for a while ... but the tight lens you took here, Daniel, was definitely worth the read. I am making it my last on the film because nothing else has even come close ...
Completely agree about IMAX. I saw it in Cinemark’s “large format” XD, which presumably cuts off 20-40% of the frame or whatever. But it didn’t matter at all, as I expected it wouldn’t. James Cameron spoke about this back in 2008ish regarding 3-D versus 2-D screenings of Avatar, and he basically said, “If the movie works it works regardless of format.”
I do think you’re being unfair to the Trojan Horse guards. They were protecting the horse from Trojans looking to burn it. Blame the guy who did such a bad job jabbing it with swords to confirm it was empty!
Also, she was more obviously pernicious than the handmaids in the source to allow Nolan’s moral tale to justify her brutal death, but Mia Goth’s character was a pretty clear stand-in for those women who were mercilessly strung up.
That's a good line from Cameron. And ha! re: the horse guards. (BTW, if you were raised on Bugs Bunny as I was, it was impossible to not watch the Trojans stab the horse and not think of the one where Bugs is in the basket and the magician has to keep poking it with his sword.) True also re: Goth. But still, no way the boyishly-handsome Peter Parker is grabbing a rope and telling his father, "Hold my beer." Thanks for reading and commenting!
A sensible commentary, as usual. Good to know seeing the film in Imax format isn't required. I saw Oppenheimer in one of those theaters and ended up feeling pummeled.
Thanks for the review. We saw it Sunday, and I'm generally pretty happy...as you point out, some of the dialogue grates a bit and a couple of the performances left me cold (Zendaya really doesn't work as Athena)

Very true. Mission Impossible was great to see in IMAX. But there are no over-the-top set pieces here.

Yes—her fame baffles me. I watched The Drama on a plane and couldn’t finish it.
This thing is more like a circus than a movie. Just watch "The Return" and you'll see what I mean.
I thought The Return was a big disappointment.
