I’m currently reading ‘Freedomland’, Price's next Dempsey novel after Clockers. from what I can tell from reviews, the film version looks to be another disasters for Price.

tough luck.

at least he got to write some of the greatest television episodes around with The Wire.

Hmmm. I was on the fence re seeing the movie: will I never learn!? Thank you. (just saw the "Kurosawa adaptation" - Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me seven times, shame on Spike...)

Ha! He might be the most overrated director of all time. He’s a bona fide celebrity but you never hear anyone truly gushing about his movies or saying, “You’ve got to see this …”

It is some novel, and Price’s tv work mines the material far far better that this dull film. Around the same time John Sayles made City of Hope and Lone star , 2 excellent films that bare comparison with the novel , expansive, character intense dramas . Neither are crime films although Lone star hinges on one. Then again Sayles is an excellent writer who directs without flash.

Daniel, I love this piece and felt the same way about the movie Clockers when it came out—I’ve never had the heart to revisit it.

Also, so agree about David Thomson, he’s equally as fun when writing about a movie he doesn’t like as he is about one he loves.

Thank you so much! If you haven’t read David Thomson’s memoir, it’s pretty good. It’s surprising because it’s not all about a kid watching movies over and over but it’s still interesting. He writes one great sentence after another.

Thanks, great call. I remember liking that book for exactly the reason you mentioned. Such an inventive writer. Just the idea of “Suspects” is audacious and fun.
