Nice essay--I like the way it keeps shifting among the movies, characters, and the writers. Makes me want to see the Harrison / Tierney / Mankiewicz movie!
Thank you for an outstanding essay on The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and a wonderful, engaging discussion with Nick Davis! I thoroughly enjoyed both! I’m a big fan of his book Competing With Idiots. It reads like a great novel.
Excellent essay. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was one of my favorite old movies when I was a little girl. It's illuminating to consider it again not only as an adult, but also as a ghostwriter. I wonder what seeds that movie was planting and/or watering? Just downloaded Competing with Idiots. Excited to read it.
Having loved as a child the TV show "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" in the 60s I found the book and read it a couple of years back. The author, Josephine Leslie (pen name R.A. Dick) wrote what I imagine might be a similar novel, "The Devil and Mrs. Devine," 30 years later (1975), four years before she died. I really want to read it but have not found it yet.

Thanks! It’s on Amazon for four bucks. A great Saturday afternoon movie.

Or rather no public library has it. It's now a collectors items and for around $80 you can buy a used one.
I thought the same—but yes, $80 is too much.
