Question, are Trulia and Bookshop good alternatives to Amazon? Asking since the link is to Amazon. Was thinking about switching my ordering and would like some input.

Hi—thanks for reading. I’m not sure. I’ve used Bookshop but never Trulia. I get most of my books from the library and the rest (almost always used) from Amazon or eBay.

More than likely 1925 will share table space with David Thompson. Thank you for the insight and to Lutz for the window into the world a century ago.

Hard to believe that Gatsby is 100!

If I meet a person who’s dismissive of Mencken, I figure it’s going to be hard for us to be friends.

I spent the afternoon reading essays from his Prejudices series and they are what the kids call bangers. The one on "Husbandry" and the romanticization of the American farmer is unreal.

I’ve read a lot of those. I don’t recall the husbandry one but it’s been a while since I’ve read that particular Mencken stuff. I agree it’s some of his best; like a Mencken cheese plate. It’s hard to beat. Even when I disagree with him, I like the vigor of his writing.

I’ve been reading sporadically from a series of excavated material, his magazine and newspaper columns, book reviews, etc. Not as high octane as Prejudices but still much fine writing. People tend to forget but Mencken is a great writer even when he’s not slamming some pet-hate with a frying pan. There’s a similar series of collections out on Ambrose Bierce; much truly great material that would have remained ephemeral if not for these big archival projects.

Yes—I’ve read Bierce’s high-octane stuff. I started reading HLM because of the recent interview I did with Tom Lutz about his new book, 1925: A Literary Encyclopedia (noted here).
