They’re ridiculously good novels, and leadership is their primary subject, along with almost everything else: sex, nature, imperialism, friendship, depression, addiction, marriage, food, office politics… the totality of life aboard and on shore.
I have never read the books, although I’ve been very much encouraged to do so by some people, because I always think they’re going to be full of nautical terminology and I just won’t know what’s actually happening. I don’t have any mental picture of amidships or avast! I enjoyed the podcast as usual very much so I watched the movie Monday afternoon. I’m very grateful to the podcast as usual for a good movie recommendation.
I did not really understand what the little boy was doing when he goes out in that little decoy raft. I could understand from context it’s supposed to be some kind of decoy or trick, but that’s as much as I could figure out. I think well I’m pretty sure that it’s the little brown haired boy who goes out in the decoy raft. There are two little boys in the movie. There’s a little blonde boy who gets his arm, cut off fairly early in the movie after the first engagement and a slightly older looking brown head boy. I think the blonde boy is called Warley or Warnley but I didn’t get the name of the brown hair boy though it could be Peter. It is the brown hair boy who goes out in the decoy in the movie and not the little blonde boy whose arm is amputated. Maybe it is different in the novels.
I enjoyed the podcast a lot as always. It’s coming to be one of my favorite weekly podcast.
Hi there! Thank you so much for reading and listening! Like you, I have not read the books, yet, although my co-host always urges me to do so. I took it that the kid was putting a lantern on that raft as a decoy, to throw off the Acheron’s aim. I also took it that it was the same kid—if not, thanks for pointing it out to me!
If you give us some suggestions, we can add them to our ever-growing list of movies to watch and discuss. Thanks again.
If reading this makes you curious about the books the film is based on, I’ve been writing about them for a while:

I will definitely check this out. I have not read any of them, but co-host Mike is always urging them upon me.

Your comment is perfect for my next post, and I'll be including a screenshot of it. Hope it brings you more readers. I just subscribed myself.
The books are so much better than the movies.
Robin Olds!!

Very true! Another reason to love the movie.
